It is easy to think the Red-bellied Woodpecker must be described as the Red-headed species because of its own red head and any sort of red belly identification is very faint or non-existent.
Most times I do not even see any pink or red on the front of these woodpeckers. For me one of its most distinctive features is the “zebra patterning” on its back.
The Red-bellied’s population is steady. It is an eastern bird that ranges from Florida where it is very common - to Minnesota where it is expanding northward. A very easy bird to attract to the backyard feeders with suet, peanuts and sunflower. In the spring it will eat oranges put out for orioles.
