I have witnessed a sharp-shinned hawk seize birds from my Fenton two occasions. It was just as you described- the hawk hid in a birch tree near the feeder and blasted in at amazing speed. The songbirds didn’t have a chance. I love all birds, including hawks, but this was awful to see, and I felt complicit in setting the birds up. Nature is beautiful but harsh.
Dang that autocorrect. It was “feeder” not “Fenton.”

Beautiful. This is the bird I see around the neighborhood seasonally.
